Newspapers 1945-1948

The project was funded by the Ernst-Ludwig Chambré-Stiftung in Lich and carried out by Charlotte Kitzinger and Katja Zinn. It was dedicated to the educational work regarding the National Socialists’ policy of annihilation in the newspapers of the eastern and western parts of Germany during the first years after the end of the war.

The aim of the documentation is to give an exemplary overview of the newspaper reporting in the different occupation zones during the post-war period in order to show how differently the public was informed of the events, which we now call the Holocaust.

Furthermore, the study also addressed the question in how far and to which extent the different political ideologies of the respective occupying power influenced the manner of representation as well as the choice of the text types, which also served as a pilot study for a large-scale project on the Holocaust and camp literature through 1949.

The range of manners of representation is considerable: There are not only reports, reportages enhanced with photographs, essays and eyewitness accounts from survivors of the holocaust, but also caricatures and poetry. Moreover, Letters to the Editor indicate different opinions of the population.

The fate of the Jews, the so-called gypsies, and political prisoners during the twelve years of National-Socialist rule is discussed, as well as the revelations of propaganda as the following subtitle “Enthüllungen aus seiner Propagandafabrik” (“Revelations from his factory of Propaganda”) taken from the report, “Wie Goebbels das Volk belog”  (“How Goebbels lied to the People” (Sächsische Zeitung, Wednesday, 25th Junde 1945, p. 6) illustrates.

The reporting of the Nuremberg trials and the detailed protocols of the statements made in court are used to inform the public about the extent of this horror. There are, however, even more suggestive ways of discussing issues of the Holocaust and its consequences, such as those illustrated in the following excerpt:

To the Victims – On the occasion of the Commemorative week for the former concentration camp inmates by Gustav Paech

Den Opfern

Zur Gedenkwoche der ehemaligen KZ-Häftlinge
von Gustav Paech

Millionen – Mann und Weib und Kind –
Millionen Brüder, seht, sie sind
entstiegen ihren Todesschächten
um klagend mit der Welt zu rechten,
um sühnefordernd zu verdammen
was ihre lichten Lebensflammen
so grausig-weh ersterben ließ.

Schweigen stehe um uns … Schweigen.
Laßt die Häupter still uns neigen.
Neig’ sich Mann und Weib und Kind,
denn du und ich wir alle sind
beruf’ne Zeugen ihrer Klage. –

Schweigen stehe um uns … Schweigen.
Seht: Millionen Brüder zeigen
schmerzverzehrt ihr Angesicht.
Ketten klirren … Und es bricht
weher Schrei an unser Ohr,
Todesschrei, wie nie zuvor
gellend ihn die Welt vernahm. –

Schweigen stehe um uns … Schweigen.
Belsen …! Auschwitz …! Todesreigen
hirnverbrannter Kreaturen!
Barbarei und Mord die Spuren,
die ihr Wahnsinn hinterließ …

Schweigen stehe ums uns … Schweigen.
Seht: Millionen Opfer steigen
in ihr Schattenreich zurück.
…………………………………………..
Hebt die Häupter. Brecht das Schweigen.
Zerstoben der Gespensterreigen:
feiger Henker und Despoten …
Dem Gedenken aller Toten
aber sei Mahnruf es und Kampfesschrei:
„Schmach und Tod der Tyrannei,
die all dieses Leid gebar!“

Hebt die Häupter. Brecht das Schweigen.
Laßt hinfort zu Grabe steigen
allen Bruderzwist und Streit.
Hebt die Herzen. Seid bereit!
Reicht, ihr Brüder aller Stände,
reicht, auf daß die Not sich wende,
reicht euch frei die Hand!

Hebt die Häupter. Brecht das Schweigen.
Laßt es aller Welt uns zeigen,
zeig’ es Mann und Weib und Kind,
daß wir guten Willens sind,
daß wir wahrhaft sind bereit,
einer neuen, bess’ren Zeit
– frei von Ketten, Schmach und Pein –
treulich uns’re Kraft zu weih’n.
