Edition of the Encyclopedia of the Lodz / Litzmannstadt Ghetto

In 2020 the Holocaust Literature Department published an edition of the Encyclopedia of the Lodz / Litzmannstadt Ghetto. This was being done in cooperation with the Department of German Linguistics, with a special focus on linguistics (Prof. Dr. Jörg Riecke), and the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute of Contemporary History.

In 1943/44, members of the archive around Oskar Singer and Oskar Rosenfeld wrote an encyclopedia of the ghetto in addition to their work on the ghetto chronicle. They wanted to make the life of the ghetto more understandable for posterity by compiling a lexicon that explains the central concepts of the ghetto language, the institutions of the administration, important personalities and events. In this way, they have created a unique but unfinished testimony. The editorial project contextualizes the encyclopedia in terms of linguistics, literature and history. The project was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

"Die Enzyklopädie des Gettos Lodz/Litzmannstadt". Ed. by Dominika Bopp, Sascha Feuchert, Andrea Löw, Jörg Riecke, Markus Roth und Elisabeth Turvold. Translations from Polish by Dominika Bopp, translations from Yiddish by Felix Tsapir and Sophie Lichtenstein. Göttingen: Wallstein, 2020.
